Facilitating the encounter with oneself in the work on the dream in psychotherapy: the contribution of Social- Cognitive Transactional Analysis

The article aims to enhance the intersubjective field between therapist and client in dream work through an experiential approach and in light of the integrated model of Social-Cognitive Transactional Analysis according to a humanistic-personalistic anthropological vision. By conceiving the dream as a set of mental schemes that include processes of different nature, implicit and explicit, we want to highlight how the therapeutic context becomes a powerful catalyst in promoting the staging of the intrapsychic processes that give rise to the dream and in favoring the encounter with oneself of the client with respect to elements initially completely extraneous to the consciousness, in order to consciously use the informative richness of the dream to orient oneself in choices in a free and responsible way. Conceptualizing the dream from an integrated perspective will help to shed light on the various processes inherent in it, in relation to its nature and forms of expression, so that they can then be identified in the therapeutic work. In the rich theoretical and methodological scenario relating to psychotherapeutic work on the dream, the main aim is to provide trainee psychotherapists with guidelines to orientate their intervention based on an understanding of the processes at work, and to learn to use the therapeutic relationship to tune in in a personal and creative way to these processes in order to achieve the specific objectives that will help the client to meet themselves. The unfolding of the therapeutic process will be traced by means of the explication of defined strategic objectives, described by means of an illustrative example and explained in the light of the rich contribution of Social-Cognitive Transactional Analysis, a substantially processual model that is well suited to working with dreams.
