Psychotherapy research into Transactional Analysis
Keywords:
Transactional Analysis, Efficacy Research, Treatment Manualization, Theory development, Evidence Based PracticeAbstract
Introduction
Transactional analysis is an innovative psychotherapy model that had a considerable diffusion, divided internally into numerous approaches. The absence of a unified empirically supported conceptual model and of research on effectiveness led transactional analysis to be considered a declining therapy model by the international scientific community in the last twenty years, stimulating various research projects as a reaction.
Method
Brief presentation of the international research guidelines in psychotherapy and comparison with research projects developed in transactional analysis.
Results
Transactional analysis researchers implemented the guidelines of psychotherapy research and have systematically defined their own conceptual model, evaluation tools, and manualization principles, defining the identity of transactional analysis in the panorama of psychotherapies. They also conducted systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses of systematic efficacy and effectiveness research published to date according to the main guidelines.
Conclusions
Research in transactional analysis is developing in a manner consistent with the guidelines of international research in psychotherapy and demonstrated the effectiveness of its conceptual model, both compared to other models and in observational studies. Finally, future lines of development of European research in transactional analysis are outlined.
