Abstract

The article addresses the issue of the function of dreams by contrasting two polar positions found in the literature, the Random Activation Theory (RAT), for which dreams have no function, and the Threat Simulation Theory (TST), which emphasizes, instead, their evolutionary function, and briefly presents the existential phenomenological view of dreams proposed by Scilligo.

A second objective is to provide useful pointers for working on patients' dreams in psychotherapy, specifically illustrating: some options for preparing patients for dream work; some precautions and protective norms; and, finally, two working methodologies, both of which are compatible with the model of Socio-Cognitive Transactional Analysis (ATSC). Both methodologies, the first experiential, the second associative, are summarized in two worksheets, aimed primarily at transactional analytic psychotherapy trainees.
